Cabot Corporation Foundation, Inc.
Through our corporate charitable contributions and community relations efforts, we support sustainability through activities in the areas of science education, safety, health and environment development, and community-based initiatives.
Our giving philosophy gives priority to science and technology education and literacy, recognizing that today’s students will be the thinkers, innovators and leaders of the future. Our goals are in line with the United States goals for advancing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. We support several programs that encourage students to pursue the sciences and explore its career opportunities. We also provide grants to support educators in these fields.
Strengthening our communities
Each year we make approximately 40 charitable contributions to nonprofits that serve the communities where we live and work around the world. In 2022, our Community Engagement Goal Team worked to advance our collective efforts by tracking regional activities and encouraging sites to lead local engagement initiatives and identify opportunities for grants through the Cabot Corporation Foundation. Throughout the year, 100% of our sites engaged in community activities. These activities ranged from volunteering our time to site-level charitable giving and donations through the Cabot Corporation Foundation. Our donations contributed more than $2 million toward our goal of investing $10 million in local communities by 2025.
Charitable giving policy
To ensure that our giving around the globe reflects the needs and priorities of our communities, and is meaningful to employees at our various locations, we ask each of our facilities to be responsible for identifying and submitting grant proposals on behalf of their facility for specific organizations they would like to see receive a grant from the Foundation.
We make donations to non-profit organizations in line with our commitment to sustainable development. We strategically focus our donations in areas that leverage our expertise in science. We strive to maximize the impact of our investment through cash, product and in-kind donations, but also the talent of employee volunteers. Donations generally will be made only to eligible non-profit organizations for which a tax deduction is allowable under the United States Internal Revenue Code. No donations will be made under this policy to partisan political organizations, sectarian organizations whose services are limited to members of any one religious group, fraternal or veterans organizations, or individuals in support of a project for personal profit.
Community Outreach & Social Responsibility
Supporting Ukraine Humanitarian Efforts
Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, we recognized the immense need to provide humanitarian assistance and support to help the people of Ukraine and refugees in neighboring countries.
To support those impacted, the Cabot Corporation Foundation has committed to donate $250,000 of which $180,000 has been distributed to date to our sites in Europe to help support local charitable organizations focused on providing critical humanitarian and refugee assistance. In addition to supporting charitable organizations through monetary donations from the Foundation, our sites and individuals have engaged in volunteer opportunities to further these efforts.
Courageous Sailing’s Corporate Challenge
For the past three years, the Cabot Foundation has partnered with Courageous Sailing to sponsor their Courageous Steps to Lead program.
As part of the Steps to Lead program, Boston Public School students experience sailing as a platform to develop leadership skills, gain confidence, explore Boston Harbor, and delve into hands-on science. This Challenge supports Courageous Sailing’s youth programming, which helps to ensure that kids from all walks of life can experience the life-long learning opportunities and growth that sailing offers.
Centerville Fire Department
We recently provided a grant through the Cabot Foundation for approximately $40,000 to help the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department purchase much needed equipment.
The fire department was operating 25 plus year old extrication tools and with the new tools they can extricate patients/victims quicker so they can receive medical care in a timely fashion. The Centerville Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency response services to the surrounding local communities and operates as the first responder for our Canal plant emergency events.
100 Blackmen of St. Mary Parish Partnership
We recently partnered with our Black Employees and Allies United (BEAU) Employee Resource Group to secure a $10,000 grant for 100 Blackmen of St. Mary Parish.
The mission of the 100 Blackmen of St. Mary Parish is to improve the quality of life for African Americans and other minorities in the community through educational and economic resourcing as well as mentorship opportunities. Recently, we sponsored The 100 Blackmen of St. Mary’s 3rd Annual Soul Food Festival in celebration of the Juneteenth holiday.
Flood Recovery Efforts
The Cabot Corporation Foundation funded a grant of €75,000 to Centres Publics d'Action Sociale, a municipal agency located in Pepinster, Belgium to support the July 2021 catastrophic flood recovery efforts.
As a member of the Pepinster community with a masterbatch facility that was impacted by the flood, this funding helps to provide social, medical and psychological assistance to individuals and families affected in the area, including financial assistance, meals, household clothing and goods, and other critical services. It also helps people whose homes were destroyed or deemed uninhabitable find alternative housing as they rebuild and recover.
Supporting Climate Education and Research
As a leader in our industry, we have a responsibility to extend our positive influence by supporting organizations in our local communities that share our values, especially those working to advance education and research around climate protection and adaptation.
The Cabot Corporation Foundation is contributing $375,000 to Stone Living Lab, a unique initiative in Massachusetts, USA that brings scientists, students, and the community together to explore nature-based solutions to climate change. Through this innovative partnership, we have established the Cabot Education and Community Engagement Program, enabling real-world applications of climate science and strengthening the resiliency of our local community.
FOSSI Sponsorship
We are proud to be an inaugural sponsor of The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI).
Founded by the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Chemours and HBCU Week Foundation, FOSSI seeks to increase the number of underrepresented professionals in the STEM workforce by providing scholarships to students pursuing STEM degrees at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and connecting those students to leadership development, mentoring and internship opportunities.
